Match report
On what would be very hot and humid Saturday, Nebraska Cricket Club took on the SPC Riders in the MACL T20 league game. Both the teams falling short of players, while some did not show up, others dozed off unconditionally (though apologetically later). Anyways the game did start a little late with Riders winning the toss (again .... Sigh !!) and electing to field. With a smaller contingent than usual NCC decided to open with Peter Patel as pinch hitter and JJ Tanwar in an anchor role. Sandeep Rana started the proceedings with the new ball (surprisingly the amazing original CA / SPC balls were used this time). JJ took guard and took a single off a straight push, Peter Patel swung hard to covers and what looked like a perfect cover drive first ball, took 2 runs. Sandeep returned the favour next ball by uprooting the middle stump and Peter was on his way back. This brought the star player Deepak Navi to crease and he swung and missed a couple of times and got some good and some not so good edges before swinging hard for a fuller ball only to see his stumps uprooted by Sandeep Rana, Atik on the other end was bowling his usual good line and length inducing some edges in between, only if he had a regular keeper, the scorecard would read differently for him. Gaurav Patil walked in and with two sheet anchors NCC proceeded cautiously and fended off new ball attack. JJ was dispatched by Jawad Yusufi caught behind by Sami in 9th over trying to up the ante and this brought in Phil Blake. Phil started cautiously but soon gathered momentum, between him and Golu (Gaurav) Patil they put up a decent partnership before Golu was run out trying to call in a cheesy single and the language barrier barring Phil to decipher the call at runtime. Golu sacrificed his wicket and Avdhoot walked in to join Phil (with special instructions to call in Egnlish only) who just went berzerk and started hitting boundaries at will, Abhay being at the recieving end, Avdhoot on the other end played a very sensible innings and once Phil got out, Avdhoot (24 in 31) ensured that he took charge of the situation and became the Alpha Dog, he hit some excellent shots and ensured that NCC played all 20 overs, in the end making a decent 135 all out of the last ball. Sriram played a quick fire cameo and DD ensured all balls were utilized.
The score looked at par looking at the Rider lineup, boasting off some of the best available talent in the city, Rajneesh Bhatti was in a mood finish in 10 overs and from the word go was very aggressive, ably supported by the one of the best and flourishing all rounders - Jawad Yusufi, The opening partership was around 70, at which point the match looked pretty much over with but as they say cricket is a game of uncertainties. Jawad Y got out to an excellent flighted ball by DD (Dwaipayan Das), Atik walked in and tried to give Rajneesh some company but was out trying to hit one too many shots , DD getting his second wicket. Sami came in to join Rajneesh with score inching close to a 100 now. Sriram and DD bowled in tandem and restricted easy run flow, Rajneesh as usual got frustrated and threw his wicket away, Deepak Navi at long off pulling a spectacular catch, just a few balls back he was found inches short of pulling a stunner but he compensated well this time and Rajneesh trying one too many was out. Sami got a loose ball from Sriram and trying to hit the longest six, mistimed it and Sriram pulled a stunner return catch one handed, captain to captain. The middle order collapse saw Sami, Mukheem, Suresh G back to pavilion. Sanddep Rana aka the Wasim Akram of Omaha had other plans, he was ably supported by veteran Suresh Yadav and they took the score within hands reach before Suresh was out off Deepak Navi. This brought in Abhay and unfortunately the last man as Riders did not have a full 11. NCC thought match was over and done with but as i said cricket is a game of uncertainties. With not too many wickets left Sandeep took it upon himself to finish the game, hitting couple of sixes and an excellent last wicket partnership brought them within couple runs of victory. Couple of LBW shouts were unheard in between and then when 18th over was in progress and Riders were almost home with 2 to score, Abhay Sharma tried to hit over covers only to find a trembling Golu Patil underneath, Golu knew if he drops the catch his pants will be on fire so he froze and watched the ball pop onto his hands, fortunately the ball did not go anywhere else. In the end a very tight game played by two under-player teams.
Dwaipayan Das for his excellent bowling spell was adjudged the man of the match (Over 4, Runs 18, Wickets 4)
