Match report
SPC OPL T20 league match: Riders versus ProKarma on August 11th 2013
ProKarma won the toss and elected to bat first.
Vijay Raghavan and Purathatil Krishnan faced up to the pace attack of the Riders - Atik Sheikh and Sami Rahmanzai. Both the fast bowlers extracted prodigious swing and troubled the batsmen with their exaggerated movement. While Krish was able to punch the ball to the point fence, Vijay was content to farm the strike. In the 4th over, Asad Iqbal, the Riders captain brought on Sandeep Rana and it paid immediate dividends when Vijay was trapped LBW off the first ball. (4 runs in 6 balls).
Krishna Kamineni and Krish set about consolidating the inning even as Atik and Sandeep attacked at both ends. Bowling off a short run-up Sandeep generated impressive pace and bounce while Atik was swinging the ball in and out making it difficult for the batsmen to get comfortable. The run-rate slowed down until the 7th over when Krishna capitalized on a couple of over-pitched balls from Sandeep and rattled the cover boundary. However, Atik extracted revenge in the next over, clean bowling Krishna. (18 runs in 16 balls, 3 fours).
Ankit was then brought into the attack and his outswingers were tough to handle. In the second over by Anikit, Krish perished, caught by Sandeep. (14 runs in 19 balls, 1 four). A few deliveries later, Usman did not offer a shot to a ball that landed on the stumps and held its line to be out LBW to Anikit. (1 run in 4 balls).
Abhiram Boyapati and Naveen Bandaru then put together the best partnership of the inning. Naveen continued his good form, hitting a couple of sixes over cover and predominantly scoring on the off-side, while Abhiram was more adventurous, milking the singles and twos and thumping the ball to the leg-side when the opportunity presented itself. As the inning progressed, Abhi got more adventurous, hitting a couple of straight sixes that reached the North pitch.
Aseem was brought on to bowl his controlled off-spinners and was hit for a six off the first ball by Naveen. Undaunted he bowled a marvelous spell, getting Naveen to edge an attempted cut three balls later for the keeper, C.S. Manish to hold onto a sharp chance. (26 runs in 20 balls, 2 sixes).
Ram Shanmuganathan kept Abhi company in his distinctive style, nudging and pushing ball into the gaps and running hard between the wickets. There was one dot ball for Ram in his first 15 deliveries indicating how busy he was at the crease. Abhi took comfort in the safety at the other end to become more expansive in his shots but tried one too many off Sandeep and was very well caught by Nabeel Mallik. (35 runs in 20 balls, 2 fours, 2 sixes).
Sriram Surapaneni and Ram then ran singles and twos and pushed the ProKarma score into par territory with some sensible batting. Ram was run out off the last ball of the inning. (23 runs in 20 balls, 1 four). Sriram was not out on 5 in 8 balls.
ProKarma made 163 for 7 in 20 overs. And remember the run-out for later in this report it will matter.
Sandeep and Anikit took 2 wickets each Atik and Asim took one wicket apiece.
Atik Sheikh and Sami Rahmanzai were sent in by Asad and the duo produced a partnership of high quality. For a long time Atik has been asking to be given additional batting opportunities and the fellow showed exactly why. Hitting shots all around the wicket and untroubled by pace or spin Atik kept the score moving along with well-placed singles. In between he found the time and timing to flick-pull a six, and square-drive a string of boundaries to the point-cover region. At the other end, Sami Rahmanzai was not to be denied either, punching with gusto and running hard between the wickets. Targeting the mid-off to mid-wicket arc for a majority of his runs the Afghani displayed excellent straight hitting skills and Vamsi Penaka, the ProKarma captain, began to ring in the changes, hoping to break they rhythm of the openers.
With the faster bowling not making much inroads, Naveen Bandaru switched to leg-spin and was able to create the breakthrough, getting Atik stumped by Krish. (52 runs in 33 balls, 6 fours, 1 six).
After a watchful phase where he did not get much of the strike, Sami opened up hitting two huge sixes and a series of boundaries on the leg-side as well as a couple of hits to the cover fence. With the run-rate well within control he tried to smash Abhiram to the onside and lost his stumps (42 runs in 20 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes). Asad came in and hustled his way to some quick ones and twos along with Sufyaan Hayath.
Vamsi opted for a double-spin attack in the form of Sriram and Krish and the duo dragged the game back towards ProKarma's side. Asad perished to Krish for 8 runs in 7 balls and while the required run-rate was just below 6 an over the tight bowling and fielding kept the game on its edge.
Sriram's 4 overs in the teens fetched 22 runs, while Krish's first 3 fetched 22. Nabeel Mallik and Sufyaan brought it to 16 runs in 12 balls. The pair took singles off every ball they faced and off the 4th ball of the last over, Sufyaan managed to carve a faster ball from Krish to the point fence. Two runs were required off two balls.
Sufyaan square-drove the 5th ball and hustled back for a second (winning) run and was run-out! (23 runs in 27 balls, 1 four).
Sandeep Rana came in to a tightly packed field with Krish bowling off-spinners from round the wicket. He tried to clear mid-wicket with a huge swing and only managed to pop it up a few feet behind him on the leg-side. Vamsi came running in from short fine-leg and got both hands to the ball but could not hold on as his momentum took over and the Riders won with the ensuing single!
Riders scored 164 for 4 in exactly 20 overs. Sriram, Naveen and Krish took one wicket each.
Atik Sheik's high quality bowling and batting ensured that he was selected as the man of the match.
