Simply Play Cricket - Biggest Cricket Org in NE NCC v UNO Durangos on Sun 28 Jun 2015 at 8:00 am to 1:00 pm
Simply Play Cricket - Biggest Cricket Org in NE Won By 2 wickets
Match report
It was a bright sunny morning, with a dry outfield along with some nice breeze which promised a great game of cricket. Those were without a doubt the best playing conditions, any teams have got this year. Just like the week before, NCC lost a 30 over game in HCL by 1 wicket and were playing MACL T20 game the following day. Can the lightning strike twice? Will Sriram win the toss? Will the game go into the final over? Will there be too many extras?
The toss took place. The lightning didn't strike twice in terms of toss as Sriram has 99.99% losing record of tosses this year. But in this case, it didn’t matter as UNO chose to bat and it was a win-win for both teams.
Ananth Rao Potlapalli and Ritesh Damera opened the innings for UNO, facing Janmejay Tanwar bowling with the wind. JJ bowled a couple of good deliveries. After that Both JJ & Avdhoot Paranjape competed with each other intensely, both stopping at nothing, trying to break Aniket’s record of bowling wides. However, despite the surge of wides, UNO wasn’t able to capitalize on it due to some smart field setting by Sriram, having Aniket just a few yards away from the pitch, which helped stop 8-10 easy runs in the early overs. The wides were coming, wickets weren’t falling, but the scorecard reflected how good NCC fielded as it read 30 odd runs in 8 overs which was largely due to sriram bringing in Sannel Patel who was making his NCC debut despite having a broken pinky. Sannel bowled tight line & length, giving nothing away and his first spell also included a maiden. Then Peter was brought in to bowl. Peter started off not too badly, which included a couple of wides and some assistance from C.S. Manish who gave a couple of byes to some runs to UNO and make the match lively. On a serious note, Manish did wicket keeping despite an injured knee cap due to throw on a run out chance in a match the day before. Ritesh smacked peter for a boundary, which got a huge roar from the square leg umpire, Arjun, which he immediately toned down, realizing his responsibility. That was another testament to how tight NCC kept the pressure on the batsmen despite those extras. Ananth went for a slog against peter which he connected decently, but not good enough, which got into the safe hands of Gaurav Patil. After these quiet overs, Krishna Chaitanya came into bat. He usually save his best only against NCC. KC announced his arrival with a bang, smashing peter for a boundary mercilessly on the first ball that he faced. KC and Ritesh had a decent partnership which elevated the run rate during which KC lofted a ball in the air which was headed towards gaurav. Avdhoot as always, had an itch in his mouth and started counting the chickens before the eggs hatched saying, “Golu toh Kabhi Chodta hi nahi”, resulting in Gaurav dropping a sitter on Minar’s bowling. One can only imagine the relief in uno camp and could see the frustration in NCC, as JJ had an outburst at Avdhoot. From the other end, sriram tried a couple of bowling changes, bringing himself and deepak to bowl without any success. However, Minar kept things tight with his well disciplined off break. Minar had the last laugh on KC as he made him hit the ball in the air towards Aniket who hasn’t dropped a single catch in Leather ball cricket this year. By the time KC got out, UNO was in much better place than it was when he arrived. with 96 in 16 overs with 7 wickets remaining, UNO had a chance to take the score to 140 or even 150. But Sannel & JJ bowled brilliantly in the death, restricting UNO to just 123-7 in their 20 overs.
From UNO, KC was the top scorer with 32(3x4, 1x6, 24 balls), Ritesh played the anchor role with 28(1x4, 35 balls) and arjun gave a finishing touch with 11 (1x6, 8 balls).
NCC bowlers despite giving 24 extras, managed to keep things tight with sannel being the pick of the bowlers with 2-12 in 4 overs, JJ with 1-13 in 3 overs, Minar 1-11 in 2 overs and peter took a wicket too. Philip Blake despite not getting wickets, made his presence felt, by narrowly missing the batsmen's helmet a couple of times.
124 didn’t seem like a big task for NCC, especially with the south ground having a fast outfield. Peter Patel not having gotten enough chances to bat this season was sent to open the innings with Minar Aware who had got off to a few starts in the season. Arjun was the opening bowler for UNO along with Karthik Tumu on the other end. After a few swings and misses, Peter Patel managed to strike big. When asked whether 2015 world cup was the most exciting WC ever, Michael Holding replied, you’d have to be silly to think that because it was very batsmen dominated due to field laws and the kind of bats, the bats don’t have a sweet spot nowadays, there are sweet bats. And that’s exactly what Peter’s Aishi bat is like, It is not really made for club cricket, it is made for guys like Pietersen, Andrew Symonds, etc .He hit a boundary and a six towards the long boundary and ran hard along with Minar. In attempt to hit another one, he edged one to ananth, courtesy of some really good consistent line & length from Karthik. That brought Aniket to the strike. Rajneesh Bhatti was about to leave, but he wanted to stick around to see Aniket bat. Aniket played and missed a few, couldn’t find the middle of his bat due to excellent bowling from Karthik and Akshay Balasubramanyam. In attempt to clear the ropes, chasing the ball from outside off, aniket sliced the ball in the air, giving catch practice to karthik. That wicket was very well worked by akshay as he didn’t change his line & length by a fraction. At this stage, NCC was 37-2 in 7 overs, with req run rate climbing up. In came Deepak Navi. Deepak provided good support to Minar at the other end, smacking some beautiful inside out shots on the off & on. Minar played well on the other end too, smacking fours, putting pressure on the bowlers. The partnership was broken by Avijut Shukla, who bowled with great disciplined. With less than 50 runs to get in 9 overs, the ISU duo was in the middle. It seemed like it would take them just 4-5 overs to finish the game. Deepak in attempt to score quickly, fell to Karthick. Sannel felt lonely without deepu, so he followed him soon to the bleachers in the next over later. Sannel was outdone by a good surprising short ball that didn’t rise much, giving a very easy catch to Prudhuvi Pathapati. 5 wickets were down at this stage, but there was no panic due to the depth in batting line up as JJ and Avdhoot were there and Phil, Gaurav & Manish were still to bat. JJ was out done by a peach by Akshay, nicking one behind. Now there was a little panic as, 4 wickets were down in the span of 3 overs. It was upto Avdhoot and Gurav Patil, who made a half century the previous day to see NCC home. Both Batsmen “well left” quite some many deliveries as the death bowling from Arjun and Avijit was superb. Gaurav managed to hit a boundary, which caused a sigh of relief in NCC. In attempt to release some more pressure, he hit one in the air toward the straight boundary, where KC took a well judged catch. score was 108-7 in 17.2 overs with NCC requiring run a ball. In came phil, he swung his bat like baseball on a few deliveries only to miss it. With 2 overs to go, NCC needed 13 runs, with 3 wickets remaining. An unimaginable situation 20 mins earlier, when 29 were required in 6 overs with 5 wickets left, but NCC always makes every match win or loss interesting. After taking a few singles and doubles, Arjun instead of bowling outside off, bowled at the stumps, causing Avdhoot to swing wildly, only to hit the timber. With 2 strikes away, UNO were sensing a win, their body language was much different. In came Manish with 8 runs required in 7 balls. Manish played and missed. Karthik eluri who was slightly expensive, was given the last over with Phil on strike. NCC required 8 runs in 6 balls with 2 wickets remaining and only Sriram to follow. Karthik bowls a decent lower full toss on the stumps. But the big bad Jamaican had other ideas as he hit it in the air against the wind. KC was circling around the ball, the hearts of all NCC guys skipped a beat, the ball was getting closer to KC but in the end cleared the boundary by a decent margin. There was a temporary relief in NCC, as still 2 wickets & 2 runs were remaining. With just 2 runs to go, all fielders converged in. The delivery is outside off, and phil connects well enough to get 2 runs, finishing the game which NCC made interesting. Hence, the lightning does strike twice, and more than twice with NCC.
UNO bowlers did a good job with Karthik & Arjun picking 1 wicket each, Avijit picked up three & Akshay picked up 2. every single bowler bowled good line & length, making batsmen earn every single run as the gave just 8 extras. On NCC’s side, Peter made 15 (1x4, 1x6 in 14 balls), deepak made 28 in 16 balls (5x4), Phil 13 not out in 7 balls (1x6) and last but not the least, Minar Aware 30 in 27 balls (4x4).
For his 2 over spell which included the priceless wicket of KC and scoring 30 runs and leading from the front, Minar Aware has to be the man of the match.
