Simply Play Cricket - Biggest Cricket Org in NE Won by 4 wickets

Match report The pool game of the MACL T20 between Nebraska Cricket Club and Omaha Cricket Association Blues was played under clear skies and mid-70s temperature with a slight breeze behind the bowler’s back. Except for a slight chill one couldn’t ask for better conditions to start a season. (In fact, neither team took the allotted drinks break after 10 overs, so mild was the setting).

Sriram Surapaneni, NCC’s captain, won the toss and asked the Blues to bat. JJ Tanwar and Avdhoot Paranjape started bowling carefully before stepping up the pace as their bowling spell continued. JJ, especially, was quite menacing, bowling only outswingers past the flashing blade which were still rising by the keeper’s shoulders when they were collected. Avdhoot focused more on a stump-to-stump line as is his style. Raj and Vami put on around 25 runs in the first 6 overs with some spirited running and wides contributing to the total. It was this enterprising nature that accounted for Raj as he turned back for a second run and Ananth, chasing down the ball to the third man region sent in a throw on the full for the keeper to collect and remove the stumps in one motion.

OCA captain Lenin looked in ominous touch from the first ball, and slammed a pulled six and a sweetly timed four to put the pressure back on NCC. None of the bowlers were troubling him and he raced to 22 in 18 balls when he went for a cross-batted swing and Dwaipayan Das, on debut for NCC, smashed the stumps.

After that there were a succession of batsmen who came, stayed for a few minutes and then perished to some tight bowling and crisp fielding. Minar Aware and DD bowled in tandem and showed great promise for the rest of the season with their accuracy and control. NCC fielders engineered 4 run-outs in the inning whole also taking all but one catches that came their way. The opener, Vamsi, waged a lone battle lasting all the way to the 15th over, scoring 34 runs in 43 balls before perishing in trying to get the run rate up. In the later overs Sriram and JJ kept a tight lid on the run-scoring, never letting it get threatening. Vijay Yajjala hit a couple of lusty blows in the final over to bring the Blues score to 119 for 9 at the end of 20 overs.

For NCC the stand out bowlers were JJ (4-0-11-1) and Sriram (3-0-11-1), ably supported by Dwaipayan (4-0-22-2) and Munir (4-0-28-1) and Avdhoot 3-0-18-0).

NCC’s chase began inauspiciously with Vijay and Naren Parimi keeping it tight and inducing rash strokes from Sriram, Munir, Ananth and JJ. Naren, in particular, was making the ball deviate appreciably and troubled all the batsmen. In no time, NCC was 24 for 4 and Gaurav Patil and Avdhoot calmed some nerves by taking the score to 70 in 14 overs. Gaurav put his head down and played the role of the anchorman while Avdhoot showed some hitherto unknown square-cutting skills picking up boundaries in the third man to point region. The running between the wickets was energetic and the stage was set for the final flourish when Avdhoot lofted one not too well and was easily caught near the wicket. (23 runs in 22 balls, 3 fours)

Exactly 50 runs were in needed in 36 balls with 5 wickets in hand when the old man C.S. Manish joined Gaurav. After flicking a couple off his first ball, Manish was gifted with a full toss that he smashed deep into the fine leg region for the first six of the inning and the floodgates were opened. 15 runs were accrued in that over, followed by 18 in the next as another six and two more boundaries were slammed by Manish, accompanied by some frenetic running. With 11 runs to get in 18 balls, Manish walked across the stumps to play across the line and was out LBW to Lenin. However, Gaurav Patil stayed calm and picked off the singles with Dwaipayan to bring the game home in 18.3 overs. Manish scored 29 runs in 14 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes while Gaurav showed immense maturity in managing the chase and staying unbeaten on 30 in 32 balls with 2 fours.

For OCA Blues, the outstanding bowling was by Naren, who bowled his spell on the trot (4-0-13-2). The other wicket-takers were Vijay (4-0-32-2) and Lenin (3.3-0-26-2).

For his game breaking inning which changed a tense chase into an easy finish, , Manish was adjudged the man of the match.
