Simply Play Cricket - Biggest Cricket Org in NE Won by 4 Wickets

Match report Sriram Surapaneni won the toss and asked ProKarma to bat first. Praveen Injapuram began the proceedings in typically belligerent fashion, smashing 3 fours in the first 5 balls, but nearly threw it away when off the last ball he was was dropped at deep cover. Oddly, he continued to bat in the same, uncontrolled way and continued to swing away at almost every ball. In spite of this attack, Janmejay Tanwar bowled a spell for the ages, getting appreciable lift and swing, bowling 3 consecutive maidens from the other end, including one to Praveen. Hanumanth took a nasty hit to the head when he missed a pull shot (wear a helmet, please, folks!) but came back at the end of the inning (more on that in a bit). Chiranjib Gupta and Sriram controlled the tempo for the next few overs, hardly giving anything away while asking good questions of the batsmen.

Amit Phatak then came in and rolled back the years to produce a vintage performance, harking back to the glory days of 2011 when he was (by a huge margin) the leading wicket-taker in the HCL league. Swinging the ball in and out from the same spot, he kept the batsmen guessing and induced a slog from Praveen that was inside-edged onto the stumps (43 runs in 29 balls, 7 fours and 1 six). Ram Shanmuganathan was in a hurry, smashing a huge six and looking to hit out when he chased a wide ball from Amit and the resulting edge was sharply taken by C.S. Manish behind the stumps.

Rajesh Panigrahi and Ankur Sharma set about settling the nerves but a piece of casual running by Ankur was capitalized by a quick throw from Manish to Amit to catch the batsman short at the non-strikers end. In his next over, Amit produced his special - the full swinging yorker-ish ball that Rajesh played down the wrong line only to have his middle stump removed.

Chiranjib Gupta got two batsmen clean bowled as ProKarma looked for some quick runs with the overs dwindling. Peter Patel and Sriram then chipped in with a couple of typically tight overs that induced more wickets such as Avdhoot Paranjape, who was smartly stumped after he stepped out to Sriram to leave ProKarma at a sorry 89 for 9 (in spite of the openers earlier belligerent start).

Hanumanth came back to bat and proceeded to smartly clip the ball around and Dwaipayan Das kept him admirable company, sacrificing his batting to ensure Hanumanth got the strike. The duo took the score all the way to 115 when Hanumanth slogged the ball high to cover where Amit took a steepling catch with ease off Partha Venkatachalam's bowling. All NCC bowlers did a good job:

Peter Patel: 4 overs, 1 for 22 (in spite of 14 runs and a dropped catch in the first over)
Janmejay Tanwar: 3 overs, 3 maidens, 0 runs
Chiranjib Gupta: 4 overs, 2 for 34
Amit Phatak: 4 overs, 3 for 28
Partha V: 0.3 overs, 1 for 2

Chasing 116 to win, Amit Phatak and Chiranjib Gupta were faced with some excellent swing bowling by Avdhoot and Devendra Athalye. Off one outswinger, Avdhoot induced an edge from Chiranjib that was taken brilliantly by Bhushan Makade at 2nd slip. Tushar Desai hit a crunching cover drive for four while Amit settled into his single-gathering mode and pushed the score along at a steady pace. A brilliant piece of keeping by Rajesh, flicking the ball back towards the stumps after receiving a fast, flat throw from Praveen, got Tushar run out.

Partha, Gaurav Patil, and Krishna played short cameos as they looked to up the tempo in the second half of the inning. At one point NCC was 41 in 9 overs, needing 75 in the remaining 11.

Eventually, Amit got out to a tired looking shot for a well-compiled 33 with 1 four. That brought the equation to 32 runs needed in 36 balls but with only 4 wickets in hand. Unfortunately for ProKarma, the batsmen at the crease were the veterans - JJ and Manish. As is their wont, the duo ran hard between the wickets and even had an all-run four as they kept the target within sight. Once Manish casually flicked a 6 off a full toss from Deva the match was well in hand and NCC won in 19 overs with 4 wickets to spare. Manish scored 16 not out with a 4 and a six while JJ was 8 not out.

Amit Phatak's complete all round game - 33 runs, a catch, a runout, and 3 wickets - was the easy choice for the Man of the Match
