Match report 2013 SPC OPL T16 Riders vs ConAgra

With their backs to the wall and in a do-or-die situation, the Riders team entered Sunday's game against ConAgra with a simple equation in mind - win and get into the top 4 of the 2013 SPC Omaha Premier Tennis Ball T16 League.

Asad Syed won the toss and elected to bat first. For ConAgra, Praveen Kuppili bowled with tremendous intensity and was supported admirably by Sachin Birar. Atik hit a four but then found it hard to put away Praveen's accurately fast bowling and was bowled trying to slog. Asad was brilliantly run out by Purathatil Krishnan and then C.S. Manish retired hurt with back spasms and when Rajneesh Bhatti was out to a sharp catch by Aniket Sawant off Sachin's bowling, the Riders were in deep trouble. Sandeep Rana began with a couple of quick boundaries but was out caught brilliantly by the wicket-keeper, Avinash Atholi, who dove full-length to pick up a blinder. Abdul Mir was bowled by Sachin bringing Sumit Singh and Sami Rahmanzai to the crease.

Sumit blazed away, peppering the off-side and the straight boundary with hit after hit, irrespective of the bowler and Sami kept him company, content to rotate the strike. Sumit hit 8 fours and a six in a dashing 58 off 32 balls before he was stumped by Avi off Naveen Alakunte's leg-spin bowling.

At one point in time, Sami was not out on 21 in 20 balls, but finished with 4,6,4 to bring the Riders to a very competitive 130 for 6 in 16 overs. Sami scored 35 runs.

Atik Sheikh and Sandeep Rana shut the door on ConAgra with their brilliant opening spell, supported by Sami Rahmanzai who came on first change. After 8 overs the score was 20 for 5 and the match was effectively over. Atik blazed a trail through the most explosive top order in Omaha, accounting for all top 4 batsmen - Purathatil Krishnan, Naveen Bandaru, Naveen Alakunte and Avinash Atholi in a commanding spell (3-1-7-4) that left people wondering why he did not bowl a fourth over. Sandeep Rana removed Ranadeer, too.

Praveen Kuppili (21 runs with 2 fours) and Aniket Sawant tried to salvage some measure of respectability but, eventually, Abhay Sharma cleaned up the last three wickets to bring closure to a 69 run win for Riders.

For their outstanding performances, Sumit Singh and Atik Sheikh were jointly voted as the Man of the Match.
