Match report SPC OPL T20 league match: NCC versus ConAgra Knight Riders on August 11th 2013

NCC won the toss and Sriram Surapaneni elected to field first.

Chiranjib Gupta and Madhu began in contrasting styles. While Chiranjib was very watchful, Madhu looked to be in good touch, thumping three fours in quick succession until a well-hit ball stayed in the air long enough for Pawan Dubey at short-cover to pick up a very smart catch. (12 runs in 7 balls with 3 fours).

Purathatil Krishnan, the ConAgra captain, came in and played a strong hand while Chiranjib began to assert himself at the other end. With some trademark vigorous running between the wickets and some sweetly-timed shots, Krish looked in ominous touch until he was picked up at short-cover by Pawan, once again, an even more spectacular take than the first one. (21 runs in 15 balls with 4 fours). Omprakash Cheerla was sent up the order but he did not last long, top-edging a short ball into the hands of the wicket-keeper. (5 runs in 5 balls, 1 four) Abhiram Boyapati played a few balls quietly before trying to manufacture a pull shot off Sriram's first ball of the match, missing it completely to be out LBW. (1 run in 5 balls).

This brought Naveen Bandaru to the crease. While Chiranjib continued to churn away the singles, Naveen took over the onus of increasing the scoring rate. Chiranjib did not waste the bad balls, though, slamming two straight sixes off over-pitched balls and one thump to cover for added measure. Naveen Bandaru has been in great touch of late and he did not let an opportunity to bat long go to waste. Scoring predominantly in an arc from point to mid-off, Naveen maneuvered the ball to wherever the fielder was not, almost toying with the field changes and the bowling. In the last over of the inning, after hitting Anish Mathew for a couple of boundaries, he tried to repeat the feat but could not clear Phil Blake at long-off. (63 runs in 34 balls, 4 fours and 4 sixes).

With two balls left, Chiranjib had the opportunity to carry his bat but setting aside personal goals he tried to smash a six and only managed to find Phil an long-off, bringing an end to a fine inning where he kept one end safe while the stroke-makers prospered at the other. (44 runs in 47 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes).

ConAgra made 182 for 6 in 20 overs. For NCC, Aniket, Ranjeeth, Pawan, and Sriram took 1 wicket each while Anish picked up 2 in the last over.

Needing over 9 runs an over Asad Syed and Phil Blake put up an enterprising partnership, running for everything even as Asad lived a charmed life, being put down a couple of times early in his inning. With Asad and Phil not being troubled by the faster bowling of Sami, Krish turned to Naveen Alakunte to start the inning with his leg-spin. After carting Naveen for a long six, Phil could not resist the challenge when Naveen sent another looping ball his way and only succeeded in edging the ball to Krish behind the stumps. (22 runs in 12 balls, 3 fours, 1 six).

Fresh off a coruscating 110* in the previous match, Rajneesh Bhatti continued his sublime form, hardly troubled by pace or spin as he found the cover and square-leg boundary every so often while playing out the good balls. Asad tried to push the pace and hit a couple of fours to midwicket and one to cover (yes, you read that right) before an attempted loft found the safe hands of Chiranjib running back from cover. (19 runs in 16 balls, 2 fours).

Aniket Sawant and Rajneesh put up a great partnership where, after an initial settling down phase, Aniket opened up revealing a surprisingly good repertoire of shots. Two shots of his - on-drives that were timed, not thumped, well over the patch of cattails beyond the long-on fence were memorable, especially since they came off Sami Rahmanzai who was in the midst of a typically probing spell of fast bowling. Running hard between the wickets the duo kept the run-rate within reach all the while. Rajneesh, by this time, looked like he had all the time in the world, placing the ball wherever he wanted to. Aniket eventually sliced a ball towards point where Chiranjib took his second good running catch of the day and Praveen Kuppali had struck a vital blow. (33 runs in 23 balls, 1 four, 2 sixes).

Pawan was sent in to charge up the run-rate and he did that with some hard-run twos and a thumping blow over midwicket, but in trying to hit to point off Krish he sliced to short third-man where Madhu came running in to take a very good catch by his knees at full tilt. (13 runs in 8 balls, 1 six).

Anish Mathew took a few quick singles but in trying to carve a ball to the cover region exposed his stumps and Abhiram found the leg-stump. (4 runs in 4 balls).

NCC's chances took a big hit when Rajneesh fell in a fashion similar to Pawan, finding the fast-moving Madhu's safe hands at third man off Krish. (51 runs in 34 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes).

Peter Patel hammered Praveen for a straight four only to lose his wicket off the next ball trying to clear the fence, caught by Abhiram. (4 runs in 3 balls).

With 7 wickets down and 26 runs to get in 18 balls, the game had reached a critical point. C.S. Manish and Ranjeeth Ballal calmly took singles and twos and kept the score ticking along waiting for the moment to strike. In his last over, Sami bowled an attempted yorker and Manish managed to get under it to hit it for a huge six over mid-wicket. With the required run-rate down to run-a-ball the task became easier and the duo removed all risk from their batting. 8 runs were required in the last over. The first ball was hit to the extra-cover fence for a pressure-relieving boundary and the rest of the runs were scored in a two and two singles as NCC successfully pulled off the heist. Ranjeeth was not out on 3 runs in 2 balls while Manish was not out on 22 runs in 13 balls with 1 four and 1 six.

NCC scored 183 for 7 in 19.4 overs.

Aniket Sawant was the man of the match for his unbroken 4 over spell of good pace to start the match followed by 33 important runs.
