Match report 2013 SPC OPL T20 Leather ball league game: Riders versus NCC

NCC won the toss and elected to bat first. While Phil Blake got into a scoring groove, Purathatil Krishnan was going well until he was adjudged LBW to Sami Rahmanzai, the Riders captain. (5 runs in 6 balls). Gaurav Patil was drawn into edging an outswinger into Sufyaan Hayath's safe hands behind the stumps off the same bowler off the last ball of the over (2 runs in 4 balls).

The doube strike by Sami put NCC on the backfoot and Peter Patel joined Phil in consolidating, and then slowly building up the inning. Peter and Phil struck a few meaty blows interspersed with watchful defence and took the score past 50 in the 8th over when Phil was caught at long-off by Sami off the bowling of Abhay Sharma. (23 runs in 27 balls, 3 fours).

Anish Mathew lasted three balls, missing an off-spinner from Aeem (1 run) to be out LBW and Peter was also trapped in similar fashion (18 runs in 15 balls with 1 four and 1 six). Aniket Sawant and Naveen Bandaru then stitched together an enterprising partnership to bring the score to 92 after 15 overs. Naveen scored on both sides of the wicket while Aniket preferred to nudge it around. However, with the overs dwindling, Aniket took on Sandeep Rana and lost his stumps (15 runs in 20 balls).

With just 5 overs left, Janmejay Tanwar and Naveen took apart the Riders bowlers clobbering 70 runs. Naveen targeted the off-side while JJ took on the straight boundary and the square-leg regions. Continuing on his good form, Naveen Bandaru, in spite of a gimpy leg, was not out on 54 in 31 balls, with 5 fours and 2 sixes, while JJ was not out on 28 in 11 balls with 1 four and 2 sixes.

For the Riders, Aseem (4-0-26-2) and Sandeep Rana (4-0-23-1) were the outstanding bowlers while Sami took two wickets.

NCC scored 162 for 6 in 20 overs.

Kashif Akhtar and Rajneesh Bhatti were largely untroubled by the NCC opening bowlers and motored along serenely at about 6 runs an over. While Khashif's pronounced shuffle across and down the wicket caused problems to the bowlers while picking them apart for singles, Rajneesh took his time to settle down and get used to the ball hitting the middle of the bat. The score was 24 for no loss when the floodgates opened and Rajneesh flicked and on-drove his way to 4 boundaries while collecting 24 runs from the over (including wides). The next over went for 12 more and suddenly it was 60 for no loss after 6. The 7th over was taken for 15 runs as Rajneesh, by now, had found his range and was thumping boundaries almost at will from cover to mid-wicket, toying with the field placements.

Sriram then reached for Phil Blake's pace bowling and was immediately rewarded when Kashif was caught on the shuffle and adjudged LBW off the first ball. (17 runs in 16 balls with 1 four; partnership 83 in 8.1 overs). JJ was brought on from the other end and for the next 5 overs the duo bowled with a lot of pace and fire. In Phil's second over, Sufyaan was caught and bowled off the leading edge while attempting to flick an attempted yorker and NCC sensed an opening. (3 runs in 8 balls)

The opening was widened further when Ranjeeth's quick pick-up and throw at midwicket found Nabeel Malik short of the crease. (3 runs in 4 balls). Sandeep Rana walked in and carefully preserved his wicket, content to nudge the ball around and bide his time, putting away a low full toss from JJ over long-off for 6 when the opportunity presented itself. The 6 over stretch at this point in time yielded just 20 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.

It was at this point that Rajneesh raised his game another notch and began to assert himself on the bowlers once again. The brief lull in the middle of his inning was just that - a lull. With the asking rate creeping back up towards 8 runs an over, the full range of his shots came to the fore. JJ and Phil were taken apart in their final over and Riders raced to victory in 18.5 overs when Ranjeesh thumped consecutive sixes to end the game. Sandeep remained not out on 14 in 10 balls.

It took Rajneesh 19 balls to score his first boundary. He played a total of 62 balls in his inning. Off the last 34 balls he faced, he hit as many as 14 of them (11 fours and 3 sixes) for boundaries. He also had 10 twos, 1 three, and 25 singles. It all adds up to a brilliant 110 not out that will linger long in memory. If this signals a breakthrough for him (he's been notorious this year for his 30's and 40's) then we are in for a treat the rest of the year.

Riders scored 167 for 3 in 18.5 overs. To no one's surprise Rajneesh Bhatti was the man of the match.
