Match report
Riders captain Sami Rahmanzai elected to bat first and sent in Phil Blake and Purathatil Krishnan. ProKarma captain, Vamsi Penaka, countered with Avdhoot Paranjape and Hanumanth. With the duo bowling a tight line Krish and Phil took their time, picking up quick singles until they tried one too many and Avdhoot's direct hit from short midwicket found Krish just short at the non-strikers end. (9 runs in 6 balls with 1 four).
Sufyaan Hayath settled down for the long haul, not that he needs any invitation to do so, while Phil raised the stakes with three boundaries to the point fence. To counter this attack, the Vamsi Penaka brought himself and Ashish Poore on. Vamsi found extravagant swing and kept one end tight while Ashish nearly produced the breakthrough in his first over when Sufyaan escaped a stumping attempt. In his second over, Ashish watched Phil launch a couple of sixes over extra cover but came right back bowling Phil off the next ball via a well-disguised slower one. (36 runs in 18 balls, 3 fours and 2 sixes).
While Sufyaan slowly accumulated the singles (7 singles and 13 dot balls in his first 20 balls), Naveen Bandaru continued from where he had left off on Saturday, peppering the off-side with one blistering hit after another until a misunderstanding led to his run-out while going for a third run. (30 runs in 17 balls, 2 fours and 2 sixes). Janmejay JJ Tanwar came in and ensured that the momentum was not lost in his inimitable style, running the fielders ragged with 7 twos, and 7 singles in a 21 ball effort that also featured 4 fours. But, in trying one run too many, he was run-out by Ram Shanmuganathan, who swooped in from point and in the same motion flew forward to make a direct hit on the stumps at the striker's end. (37 runs in 21 balls, 4 fours).
Sami Rahmanzai thumped a few balls to the deep and ran a few quick runs to end up not out on 7 in 5 balls.
But the fulcrum of the Riders inning was the 50 ball marathon by Sufyaan. After his slow start, Sufyaan had just 4 dot balls in the last 30 balls he played, while collecting 6 boundaries along the way, most of them in his favored point region as Omprakash Cheerla, Vamsi, Avdhoot and Hanumanth tried to stop him from using his trademark flick shots. Sufyaan ensured that the inning retained its fast pace till the end, finishing unbeaten on 58 with 6 fours.
Riders made 187 for 4 in 20 overs.
Atik Sheikh and Sami Rahmanzai are the most feared opening bowling pair in Nebraska and they showed why in a blistering display of pace and swing bowling of the highest caliber. Vineesh and Praveen Injapuram were repeatedly beaten by the in- and outswing that was generated while the keeper and slip fielders kept moving slightly further back after every ball. Praveen slashed and slashed hard when the opportunity presented itself, helping himself to two sixes and two fours over point when the line wavered and Vineesh managed to elude the deep fielder at third man himself with a couple of slashes of his own. A regulation chance was put down by the keeper off Atik's bowling and Praveen capitalized on it by taking Atik for 20 runs, all behind point in the 5th over.
In spite of the torrid start, the openers had negotiated 5 overs and the score was a healthy 49 for no loss when Sami took a break and brought the 6'4" tall Jamaican Phil Blake on to bowl. Operating off a shortened run-up, Phil generated immense bounce, getting called for wides (above head high) in every over while he kept the ball at or near the chest of the batsmen. Praveen took a four off the first ball with a fierce cut but, three balls later, perished in trying to repeat the stroke, caught on the deep point fence by Atik. (25 runs in 20 balls, 2 sixes and 2 fours).
Janmejay Tanwar came on from the other end and, bowling off his full run-up, proceeded to bludgeon his way through the middle order. With the first ball of his spell he bowled Vineesh (15 runs in 17 balls, 2 fours) cracking the off-stump. With the 5th ball of the over a bouncer flew off Vijay Ramakrishnan's handle and Sami pouched a sharp chance at short mid-wicket. In the next over from Phil, Ram squirted a ball to point where Abhay snaffled a difficult chance. With the first ball of his second over, JJ completed the job he had begun by shattering the off-stump into three pieces, ending Vamsi's very brief stay. Avdhoot was caught behind in JJ's next over by Naveen Bandaru and just like that a healthy 49 for no loss had become a staggering 55 for 6.
Nagraj, Hanumanth, Ashish and OmPrakash fanned the flames a little bit, thumping a four each but the heart of the inning had already been gutted during that fiery middle spell and the last rites were administered with Aseem picking up two wickets. When Gaurav Patil castled the final batsman the game was officially done with Prokarma all out for 97 in 18 overs.
Sami (2-0-7-0), Phil (3-0-14-2), Atik (3-0-34-0) and Aseem (3-0-16-2) had remarkable analyses but the highlight of the day was JJ's bowling. Taking a 5-fer in just 4 overs is remarkable under any circumstances but when all of the dismissals are because of genuine wicket-taking deliveries it is an added bonus.
For his menacing bowling (4-0-13-5) and 37 runs, JJ was the unanimous choice for the Man of the Match.
